20th December, 2008

Well today was a good day, great sunny weather. We had a small job to do today - that was to bottle the first batch of Aussie Beer. I have made a bitter am hoping that it will taste better than that cold Australian stuff they call bitter.. Here are some pics of the bottling factory...

The day then went on as usual - We had seen that the Wallaroo Christmas Firework display was tonight at 9-30pm. We decided that this would be a good event to go to. Well got into the car at 9-00pm to see the fireworks had already started. Well we got down there and saw the finish. Some photo's of what we saw...

22nd December, 2008

Today we went to the Kadina Christmas Pagent. Basically it was a carnival through the street followed by a carol service on the green. Think it was just another way to show off what you have got in the way of cars and bikes etc. Here are the photos.

Well was not a bad show, most people from the town made the effort. Might have to show them how the Brits do things though.....

25th December, 2008

Well HAPPY CHRISTMAS to you all.

We went for a walk along the Beach today. What a shame that is was sooooo busy - A total of 12 people there... Could not believe it - it was so crowded...

Whilst on our walk - Tracy got attacked by a killer CRAB - She was so happy that I was there to catch it, she did manage to get some photo's, once she had got her breath back...

We have found that there are a lot of jellyfish around - we have noticed one that keeps reminding us of a condom stuck in the sand - see what you think....

Well what do you think - let us know.

We dont know what we are going to be doing on New Years Eve, we were going to go and have a drink etc on the beach - but we have noticed this sign on all paths to the beach...

Well that has put an end to that - will have to see what happens.

That's all for now so see you all later.

Well life has been much the same as always, nothing really changes there then.. Have been busy working hard, getting hotter by the day. Temperatures are now in the low to mid 30's on a daily basis, feels like 130 in the car. Making good use of the Aircon there.

Well what have we been up to apart from work - well......

On the 5th was Tracy's birthday, she had a few cards and a couple of prezzies.. so that saw Tracy's first birthday in OZ. No different to normal just have to good weather to go with it.

On the 7th we decided to go somewhere for a change of scenery. We said in the blog before that we went to Moonta and found nothing there... Well think we must have had our eyes closed or went through on the wrong road. Well we went and found a lovely little town. Had a walk down the street. Then we had to stop - there was a roar coming from a side road - and then suddenly about 100 moterbikes drove out. We later found out that they were on a gift run to needy children... how nice.

We then drove down to Moonta bay - what a lovely spot, so took some photos.

On Friday the 12th, my mobile phone rang at 4-30 AM, it was my boss saying that there was no work today... This was due to the rather large storm that was above. We had rain all day Friday and most of Saturday. There was that much that it broke all records. We had about 100mm or 4 inches. Good for keeping the dust down, but makes work difficult. On monday we got our concrete truck stuck so went home at 8-00am.

On Saturday 13th we went to Port Pirie to get our Christmas tree. On the way Tracy started screaming, making me wonder what the hell was wrong - well she had seen 3 kangaroos bouncing along the side of the car. Luckily they bounced off into the bush and never damaged the car. A nice sight though. Anyway got to Port Pirie and found they have a BIG W - basically a cash and carry, so we got a tree (artificial) and some decorations. Stopped at Subway for lunch and drove back. Bearing in mind that Port Pirie is about 2 1/2 hours away...

On the 14th we decorated the tree - here is the result.

Today the 19th we have had some work done on the house. We now have 2 large rainwater tanks. A carport and a big pile of gravel. We have struck a deal with the owner of the house, she is supplying the gravel etc and I will be landscaping the garden, in exchange for a few weeks free rent... Helps us all out.

Well think thats about it for the moment - and my beer is getting warm, so will finish here and will update very, very soon.

Hope everybody is ok and please keep intouch.

Hi all, been a while since our last update, things here have been quite busy.

Now Sunday afternoon and the sun is out, have had a week of not brilliant weather - well when I say not brilliant I mean a bit cloudy and not as warm. Average temp has been a chilly 26 to 28 degrees.. Ha Ha Ha, have had a couple of storms in the evening. What a show, storms are big here, nothing like the ones in the UK. At least we are not in Queensland they have had really bad weather, about 14 inches of rain fell overnight the other day. They will still complain about a lack of water.....

Tuesday 4th November saw Melbourne Cup Day - A horse race which stops the whole country. Finished work at lunchtime so we could all get home or to the pub to watch the race. We were not to bothered by this but at least it gave me a half day off with full pay...

Have been doing a lot of walking over the last few weeks - had quite a long one the other day.... Woke up to find that the car had two flat tyres... I had no foot pump and all the neighbours were out. So we decided to walk to Wallaroo - what a mistake... It is about 5Km to walk along the beach but somebody in their wisdom put a marina in the way, which you have to walk around, this puts an extra 3km on the journey. Anyway got to the garage and purchased a can of tyre weld and a bottle of pop, and then walked all the way back.

Got tyres sorted the next morning in the garage in Kadina. At least we did not have to walk there.. The exercise is good for you so they say.

Things are starting to happen at the house, the landlady has decide to put in two rainwater tanks, each one holding 10,000 litres. The planning has gone through for the carport so something should be started pretty soon. Who knows we might have a garden for christmas, We could be having turkey on the barbie yet....

Am still working at the chicken farms, we are producing one shed a week at the moment. As there are 40 sheds to build there is quite a bit of work to do still. Have included some photos to show you my office....

Will try to remember to update this blog on a weekly basis, Have been a bit lazy not doing it for a while, work, rest and play seems to take over when you are in a place like this.

Well another great week has just flown by, time seems to go just as quick here as it did back in the UK. Nothing changes there then. Things are a bit strange when contacting people in the UK since the clocks went back there. We are now 10 1/2 hours ahead and makes calling people very interesting.

Worked Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday again this week.

On Wednesday we took our empty bottles and cans to the re-cycling depot. Came out being 25 dollars better off. They pay you 10 cents per item if you take them to the correct point. This is great as it keeps the countryside tidy and people make a bit more money.

Took some photo's of the area we are living in, yes a building site at the moment.

After lunch we went for a walk along the beach. Here is the road to the beach from our house.

Whilst on our walk we both had to laugh at a chap and his wife trying to catch a crab. He decided to try to scoop it up out of the water with his hat. Was quite amusing to watch. The I found one and showed Tracy how it should be done, and I didn't use my hat.

This one was above the minimum size for keeping but I decided to put it back and allow it to live another day.

We also took some photo's of the seaweed that is around the area.

We then found a starfish and just had to snap that one.

This morning (Sunday) we were woken by a very large storm. We had thunder and lightning along with the biggest downpour of rain I have ever seen. It did not last for long and was only enought to wet the surface of the ground. We had a quick walk down the beach and took some photo's of the storm clouds.

Had a quick walk into the cheap shop in town, it is the only shop that is open on a Sunday. They have all the Christmas stuff in already, at least cards etc are very cheap here.

Had a quick walk along the pier after lunch and nearly got blown off the edge as the wind is still very strong. Time is now 5-00pm and sat down doing blog watching Aussie TV. At the moment we get 2 channels, but will be signing up for satellite very soon. At least then we will have a choice of what we watch.

Next update will be next Sunday.

Well another normal week this week.

Worked Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. This does not work out too bad and breaks the week up having Wednesday off. Would be nice to work a full week (to bring more money in) but with the Global recession at the moment, then something is better than nothing.

We have been out walking every evening as the weather is so nice, with temperatures getting up to 39 degrees this week. Still have not had any rain.

Farmers here are starting to get worried as they are predicting strong wings (storm force) for the weekend. They have only just started the harvest and are worried that they might loose a lot of the crop in the winds. The farmers are now harvesting throughout the night and are making a lot of dust.

Got the local paper on Tuesday and noticed that The Copper Cove Marina was having a boat show on Saturday. We both said we would go as it is our local Marina and should show our support.

So on Saturday we went. Yes well, it was a boat show (if you can call 10 boats a show) with a live band, bar and bbq. Think we spent about 20 minutes there. Have included the photos.

This last photo is where we get our beer and wine from, we have a drive through bottle shop. A bit different to the UK and a bit strange for the first time.

Now geting set for the week ahead. So from now on we will update the blog on a weekly basis unless anything special happens in the mean time.

Have been working all week, Had to stay out overnight on Tuesday as we were working about 150km away and is was more economical to stay away.. Poor Tracy has been left on her own, think she is getting bored during the week. Will have to try to sort out another car so she can be more independant...

Saw 2 Dolphins in Wallaroo bay the other evening. Was a great sight as this is the first time we have both seen wild dolphins, being themselves and not having to perform.

Have been into town and have managed to get some furniture on interest free credit, so have chosen a 3 piece suite, washing mashine, fridge, freezer and a bed. We could really do with more but it will have to wait. Hopefully this should be delivered on Saturday.

Furniture was all delivered on Saturday. Thank goodness, it is so nice to be able to sit down on a sofa, wash our cloths and go to sleep on a proper bed. The airbed had done us proud but it can only be done for so long...

Sunday we decided to go to Port Pirie.

Had to go a bit later than planned as there was a knock on the door, the real estate agent who is looking after the site we are on had organised a family day for all residents and owners who have not built yet, but she had a problem.

The catering people had turned up but never brought their generator, oops. She asked if it was possible for them to use our power, could not really say no - could we?

Left them to it as we had plans for the day, they were going to finish at 4-00pm so I said we would be back.

Pictures of how dry the area is at the moment.

Some of the local houses - every one is different...

The Airstrip at Kadina..

In Port Pirie we bought a coffee table and 2 bedside tables from the cheap shop, cost us about 30 dollars for the lot, what a good buy.

Got back and disconnected the power for the catering people. Then another knock on the door and Tracy was presented with 2 Loaves of bread and a Hamper - full of sweets (yum, yum, yum)

Had a walk along the pier in Wallaroo, watching the fishermen, catching all the Crabs.

Had a bite to eat and relaxed on our new sofa.

Have been busy working all this week, Have spent a lot of time at the chicken farm, making concrete panels. Weather is making life different, working in temperatures of 36 degrees is not easy. Blasted flies, it is like every fly from the area knows you are there and they love sitting on peoples glasses, sometimes I can't see through them for the flies...

Am starting work at 6-30am and finishing at about 4-00pm, gives us plenty of time in the evening to have a relax by the beach... ha ha ha ha.

Had a very lazy day on Saturday, just having a walk around town in the morning and a long walk along the beach in the evening.

Today, I decided to take Tracy and show her the scale of the chicken farms that I am working on. It is about an hour's drive with the last 25 minutes on country roads, these are gravel roads, very dusty and not much uses them.

All was good until we had a blow out on the car, just so happens that it had to go just as we were going around a corner on the gravel road, To say we had no control would be right.

We ended up in the hedge. Stuck on the bank. Changed the tyre but could not get off...

** it is getting hotter, the car is stuck and nobody around...

Started to walk to the chicken farm which was the closest thing being 5km away. About 3/4 of the way to the farm a nice man stopped and offered help. We got the car off and thank god no damage at all.....

Tracy does not like the Gravel roads anymore, but will have to get used to them as they cannot be avoided sometimes.

Had an early night and a rest before work for the week.

Weather here is still great and must not keep on about it..

Had a lazy day yesterday (Tuesday) but did take my CV round to a few people. No luck with that though, most of them said They will keep hold of it and keep me in mind.

I did phone a chap who was advertising in the paper, he told me the job had already been filled but would like to interview me anyway.. What have I got to loose.

Have to meet him at Kulpara about 50km away at lunchtime.

Have just got back from interview (only took 2 Hours) and have been offered a job, Not really what I want to do but its something. I am going to be working for a Landscaper but making Concrete Panels for the sides of Chicken Sheds... Big business here. They have 3 sheds at the moment and are building another 45, each shed holds 45,000 chickens. Each chicken is bought for 50 cents and after 8 weeks is sold for 3 dollars.

Hope this will work out, but at least it will bring some money in etc.

Went food shopping again and then for a long walk along the beach.

Took a photo of the sunset.

Well a change this morning, woke up and the sun is shining again, makes a change.

Popped into Wallaroo as there are Helicopter flights today at the boat ramp. Yes was a good idea, but it only lasted for 2 minutes, a quick trip around the bay and that was that. So we did not spend money on this one - We went to Woolworths instead.

Had a late lunch today and then had a walk along the beach.

Think we walked a long way as we walked to Wallaroo and back.

Had to turn the air conditioner on tonight just to take the heat off.....

Tomorrow (Monday 6th) is a Bank Holiday for Labour Day here, so there will not be any shops open and not much to do. So will have a lazy day and see what happens.

Woke up late this morning, think all the rushing around has caught up with us.. Did not sleep too bad on our Blow up bed, will have to do something about it though - it is ok for a couple of nights...

Had breakfast then went into Kadina for a few more bits, just a few basics, sharp knife, chopping board and saucepan etc.

Could not be too long as the shops shut at midday on a Saturday.

Got the local paper and noticed that there were a lot of Garage sales on today, so decided to go and have a look, never know might pick up a bargain..

Well what a load of old tat,,,,, all the good stuff must have gone first thing in the morning. well never mind, was worth a look..

Had lunch and then saw there was a local show on..

Kadina "Show & Shine" it was called, found out in the paper that it was a car and big rig show. Yes looked good so we went.

It cost us $5-00 each (not a problem as it all went to the flying doctors) got in and what a dissapointment. Supposed to be a car show - well if you call 50 cars a show then -

It was a meeting for young lads and their custom cars... There were a few classics but nothing like we are used to.

Buy the way the white Porshe is Tracy's new car!!!!.....

When we help at the car show at Popham Airfield and we get 900 clasic cars in, 50 is nothing.

We only spent about 10 minutes there, drove back to house.

Went down to Caravan Park to check e-mails.

Back for tea and then sat down to watch a DVD..

Retired for the evening.

Woke up this morning after a really nice night's sleep. A proper bed for a change.

Oh guess what the weather is today.................. Yes it's raining. Something different to report at last.

Time is 6-30am, got up early as we are both excited as today we pick up the keys to our rented house.

Drove to Kadina (9Km down the road) and went to the bank. Withdrew the security deposit and first 2 weeks rent for the house. Walked to the estate agents and did the paperwork. Picked the keys up.

Then we had to think..... Oh we have a house and 2 suitcases but nothing else. So went to the cheap shop. Bought a kettle, cutlery, plates etc. Picked up some lunch from woolworths and then drove to the house.

Had lunch then back into town, bought 2 deckchairs and a blow up matress. Could not get fridge etc as nobody could deliver for at least a week.

Got back to house at 4-30pm and Tracy started to clean... The agents did not get a cleaner in and there was a lot of dust as we are on a building site.

Will now go through the house photo by photo..

The Main Bedroom....

We went for a quick walk around the area where we are living, walked down to the Beach and then back.

We then ate tea, sat down and watched some Tv on the Laptop as we do not have a Tv at the moment... Starting to feel like home already.

As we have no Internet in the house at the moment we drove down to Wallaroo Beach, where we can pick up wireless internet provided by the local Caravan park. Watched the thunder and lightning storm that was overhead.

Got back to house to find we have no hot water at the moment. We put it on this morning but nothing - I am wondering if it is on a time clock and will heat up over-night. We will find out in the morning. Will let you all know......

Woke up to..... yes another sunny morning. Have just cleaned the campervan again, emptied the toilet and got things ready to go. Must return the van clean or we will loose our security deposit, at the moment every penny counts...

Drove to the nearest bank and withdrew the rest of the money for the car. Very helpful lady in the bank. Then drove to campervan people, left van there and walked to car sales place. Picked car up and drove to the campervan. Unloaded all our stuff (did we really bring this much with us)..

Returned van, everything was ok, got our deposit back and were all very happy.

Went and filled the car with gas costing 70 dollars (about 25 pounds) bought some food and got ready for the drive back to Wallaroo (140km)...

We have decided that we will only be going to Adelaide a few times a year as it is too busy, too many people in what they call a small area. We have both been brought up in the country and are glad that is where we are staying.

Drove past the Adelaide Salt Quarry.

Then past somebody's modern art display. All made out of old metal etc.

Stopped at Port Wakefield and found a little Bakery/Deli (Deli in Oz is like a British corner shop) and purchased a roll each. Got back in car and found a quiet spot to eat it. Very tasty. Took a picture of the local Bowling green.

Got to Wallaroo at about 5-00pm and had to think where we were going to stay??.. We went to North Beach Caravan park (where we had stayed before) spoke to the owner and she said we could have one of their Luxury Cabins for the night (at a reduced rate) wonderful.

Cabin was great, basically it was a 2 bedroomed bungalow, backing on to the beach. Wow what a view.

Decided to have a relaxing night after all the rushing around we had done.

As we have been driving again we have a bit more animal count to add:-

Todays was

1 Blackbird
1 Something - Could not make out what it should have been.

Today we have woken up to a very breezy morning. Still very warm though.

Headed into Kadina to fill Van up with fuel and empty the chemical toilet.

Have to head for Adelaide now to drop van off, so will head there and drop our cases off at Tracy's Aunt who lives just outside of Adelaide. Will make life easier..

Have just driven into Port Wakefield and stopped for a cuppa, we are on the main A1 Highway.

Drove past a sign advertising the local festivals - including the festival for the Polish in the area..

Getting very windy now.. They have given out over the radio a Severe Wind warning - I can see why..

Have just arrived at Adelaide - What a difference, so many cars, so built up, I am glad we have decided to stay in the country.

Have just driven to South Brighton, on the south of Adelaide - this is where Tracy's Aunt lives, will drop cases off now.

Dropped cases off and had a quick cuppa, then thought - OH - if we drop campervan off, how are we going to get back to Wallaroo - only 147 km, could be a long walk...

So drove to the campervan drop off point and then drove to the nearest car sales place we could find.. Funny it was run by a Lady who had emigrated from Newcastle some 26 years ago... Anyway spent 1500 dollars on a car, bit dirty on the inside but a good runner. Only trouble is the garage did not accept card payment. Things go from bad to worse..... Found a cash machine great.... No. Can only withdraw 500 dollars a day.. and all banks are now shut as it is 4pm.

So went to campervan people on hands and knees, extended our hire for 1 more day. So went back to Tracy's Aunt and picked up our cases, then headed for a campsite.

Plan is to get to a bank in the morning and withdraw cash, go to car sales and pay for car, then drop van off. All this is possible as in Oz you do not need car insurance or tax or much in fact. If you buy a car with in-date reggo, then you are laughing. You pay about 300 dollars a year for reggo. Cheaper.....

So went for a walk, ate our tea and then retired for the evening.

Tracy took some extra photos on the route..

Woke up to another great sunny morning. Had a walk along the beach before having breakfast...

Have to take camper van back tomorrow so we are heading into town, hoping to find a property to rent.....

Got to Kadina about 10-00am, went into several property agents and have found that renting is like finding gold nuggets, quite difficult. We have got the details of 2 properties, so are heading off to have a look at them.

Oh the first one - yes - not for us....... In the middle of town and not a very up to date property... so on to the next,

MMMMMMMMM Much better, a brand new house - It is on a spot called North Shores, in the township of North Beach just a couple of minutes from Wallaroo and about a five minute walk to the beach. Have both looked at each other and never said a word just got back into van and went to see the agent.

Have just got out of the property agents and all going well we have the property and can move in on Friday of this week. Just have to confirm a few details as we are new to the country but all should be fine..

Will stay in campervan tonight in the local area and head off in the morning.

Here are some photo's of the outside of the house.

Well woke up to find that.................................................yes another sunny morning. HA HA HA HA sorry about my humour....

We have taken the decision to stay here a bit longer to try and get a feel of what or what doesn't happen around here. So started the day as usual by visiting our usual shop "woolworths". I wish the fridge was bigger in this van or even if it had a freezer.... Ha that would save so much time, but I am not that sad as the bonus points on our saver card are starting to add up.

Took our lunch with us and went to Port Broughton. We stopped the van and had a walk then ate lunch.

Then the wind decided to pick up so we headed back to base.

Driving back Tracy was her usual self and used the camera.

We saw a !!!!!!!!!

No not a Skink

A Wallaby..

In somebody's back garden, they are bringing it up with their dog...

We have just managed to sort Internet out so have some updating to do.........

Saturday 27th September.

Well today was another great sunny day, but a bit windy today. That is not a bad thing as it keeps the heat down a bit.

Yes we had a great night in the campervan, by the side of the road. We had to buy some candles as we forgot that the campervan lights needed to be plugged into the mains supply. It did make it all the more romantic though.

We have decided that this is the area that we like so we are going to spend a bit of time having a really good look around.

The area is Wallaroo and Kadina.. about 1 1/2 hours from Adelaide to the West. On the northern Yorke Perninsula for those that are that interested.

Went for a walk and think we have covered every street in the town, but at least we know where everything is.

Have booked into the Office Beach campsite for the night so will take it from there.

The usual chores await so will have to go now.

Tracy had the camera today so here is the result...

We then went for a walk up the coast and took some photos of the Sunset at Wallaroo Bay.

Have just noticed the time and we have left it too late to get a campsite, so we are going to have to spend the night in a rest area in the campervan.... Oh the joys.

Have got a nice view of the bay though, but not for long - it gets dark at 6-30pm here.

Had a walk around town and went back to site for a cuppa. Have decided to have another lazy day. Well why not!!..

I started to sort the masses of photos out so they can all be put onto CD.

After lunch we had a walk around Copper Cove Marina - looking at all the million dollar houses all with private jettys.

Tracy has just got the laundry in from yesterday and put another load out.

We have decided to stay yet another night. So we headed for woolworths to stock up.

Decided we would head for Tickera today - a small village (population 70). We found a picnic spot to have a cuppa. Found there were a lot of flies so ended up sitting in the van.

We did see a Skink close up - we got about 12 inches away from it.

There were people working on the beach, moving large boulders from one side to the other. Could not work out the reason for this.

We did spot a new house being built - so took a photo to remind us of how it was done here.

Tracy noticed some odd looking plants and I explained that they were the Aloe Vera plant. This one was quite amusing though.. So Tracy got busy with the camera.

Had a lovely lunch, and then decided to head back, taking photos of the road as we went.

Then OH came across a sign that said "Road Closed" follow detour - We did not think much of this and followed the detour signs. Just like being back in the UK, except in OZ if they need to shut a road they send you on the next shortest route, and if that happens to be along the beach then so be it.. Yes they had graded a level surface in the sand and diverted all traffic along it. This included the Road Trains (70 tonne trucks). We found this most amusing and took photos.

Got back to the campsite and went for a walk along the beach ( missing the cars as we went).

As the weather was so nice we both got in the water - up to our knees, not quite warm enough for a swim yet.

Tracy got the laundry in - A womans work is never done.

Animal count for today is poor..

1 Skink.

STILL NO KANGAROO...

If you notice a lot of pictures of road signs - then I am sorry but Tracy has developed a strange fetish for them........

Campsite here in Wallaroo is very quiet but it does look very new, like it has only been open a short while, very clean and new looking... Have decided to stay an extra night to enable us to have a good look at the area and check out the local property market.

Drove into Wallaroo town centre - not much here but it does have the basics, Food, bank post office etc....

So we then drove into Kadina, about 5 mins down the road. This looks much better, a small but growing town - even managed to lose Tracy in a couple of shops, first time since we have been in Oz.

Have found out that Target is the Auzzie version of M + S. Currently looking at Employment and Estate Agency's in the area as we both feel at home here.

Thought we would pop off and find somewhere to have lunch - so headed for Balgowan.

Stopped at a view point and had a short walk along the cliffs.

Nowhere to have lunch so carried on. Found a place called Chinamans Wells - so had a look as it sounded good.

Oh - what a mistake, a sign board and a few tin sheds.....

So with that we carried on to Port Victoria. Found a lovely spot for lunch.

Left Port Victoria and headed for Moonta - Just drove through as not much there.

Time was getting on and we had travelled a few Km by now, so headed back to the campsite. Tracy decided to do the Laundry, and we then went for a walk along the beach.

Animal count for today is:-

2 Skink.

Well what a lovely sunny start again, but windy, as much as we are sat in the van in the middle of a dust storm at the moment.. Left the campsite and popped into town - didn't like it very much - should not say it but too many natives around.. So headed back to Kadina.

Some photos of Port Augusta..

Stopped at Mt Remarkable National Park and spent $7:50 on a parking ticket for the day.

Unfortunatley have not seen any wildlife as yet. It has just started to rain, so what a good time to have lunch. 2 Emu's have just joined us for lunch - unlucky they didn't get any.

Left the National Park and carried on to Kadina. Started to see "Free Watermelons" growing by the edge of the road again..

Arrived at Kadina, No Campsite, so had to drive another 9Km up the road to Wallaroo... No campsite at Kadina ... mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Went for a walk along the beach, had something to eat and retired for the evening.

What a wonderful morning. Left the campsite at Ceduna at 9-30am after getting our gas bottle filled up. Wont make that mistake again......

Heading back to Port Augusta. It's that time when we will have to find temp work etc....

Not a pleasent journey today.. Have about 500km to cover, it's going to be a long day. Stopped for a cuppa in the layby and oh.. never got anything for lunch. Wonder if there is a woolworths that is open..

Have gone through many towns and have seen nobody. Everywhere is like a ghost town. It is getting on and still not found a woolworths.

To break the day up we took some photo's...

The Flinders Ranges..

The Aussie hard shoulder and the Princess Highway - that we are travelling on..

Did see another road user..

And the Aussie water pipe complete with pumping station..

Then we went past a place called Iron Knob. Found out this is where they extract all the Iron Ore from the ground...

When travelling in Oz remember that a Sunday is the day that most large trucks are on the road. This is what they call a road train. About 80 feet long, it takes some planning to overtake this one.

Eventually got to Port Augusta at 4-00pm and found a Foodland that was open. We stopped there and re-stocked the supplies.

On a personal note to all our friends that Know Ian Trask - Thought this might amuse you....

Going on from earning a living I have worked out the way to make a fortune in Oz... Well South Australia anyway. I have found out that the local council are big into re-cycling and pay 10cents per glass/plastic bottle or can etc. Working on this, on our trip today of 500km only on one side of the road I could have made $120.00 so working on this a collection trip would take a week per area, making nearly $1500.00 per week..... sounds good to me.

Have seen more animals by the side of the road. Todays count is...

1 Blackbird.
4 Wallaby's.

Oh and for those of you that have no idea what a Skink is.... its about 12 inches long and looks like this....

Tracy is convinced that a little man with his truck, goes out every day placing these animals there so people will think they are from that area.... MMMMMMMHHH.

Popped into town (in Ceduna) to have a look around, but had to hurry as all the shops closed at midday...... odd that one.

Drove about 25km to a spot called Smokey bay for lunch, nothing there but a bay - took a photo though.

Back to the campsite, had a relax in the sun whilst watching the locals (native ones - aboriginal) cooking there supper on the open air free BBQ. Was rather amusing but could not understand a word they said.

Cooked our supper - well tried, but the gas ran out in our van, so we had to make use of the campsite facilities, they have a free BBQ and Gas stove. Wonderful just what we needed. Now sitting down writing this blog, beer in one hand laptop in the other. Well it is 9-00pm nearly time for bed.

Have not looked at the plan for tomorrow yet but sure we will be doing something.

We have decided that it must be Skink season as all we see on the edge of the road is Skink..

Oh and one Wallaby.

Headed for Streaky Bay. Found a side road on the way that pointed us to Coffin Bay, so just had to have a look.. Another gravel road but oh have just parked up next to an Emu with 14 babies. Just had to have a photo of that one.

Got to Coffin Bay and yep another bay..

As you can see in photo - did find a Honey Bee nest...

Back on we went and past the local Airfield...

Not much to speak of and haven't seen a plane yet..

Continued on and found a place called Elliston, decided to park up and have lunch, chose a good view. Fed the seagulls as well. Have to find a gas station now, last leg of journey has been longer than planned. Found one, not sure if it is legal though, 1 pump next to a tin shed.... mmmmmmmm.

Still heading for Streaky Bay, found a road saying Great Ocean Tourist Road, thought we would take the scenic route for the next part of the journey. Oh my mistake... 20Km later and we have come to a dead end. Had to turn around and go all the way back.

Passed through Venus Bay, supposed to be Dolphins living here - didn't see them..

Stopped on the edge of the road to take a photo of Lake Hamilton and found the Lake Hamilton Eating House. Not used any more...

Stopped at a waterhole for a quick cuppa and headed into Streaky Bay. Very small so decided to carry on to Ceduna. Time is now 4-00pm another 107km, will the campsite still be open when we get there.

Yes made it and have taken the only spot the site had left. Lucky us. Good view from our window though.

We are seeing lots of snakes in this part of Oz, and lots of stuff by the edge of the road..

Todays count is:-

10 Skink.
1 Rabbit.
1 Blackbird.
1 Snake.

Will probably stay here another night so that we can have a proper look around.. will tell all later.

Here are the photo's of Tumby Bay, where we stayed last night..

Had a quick walk around town, very dissapointed. Was not much there at all. Enough to live with but only the basics.

So we packed up and headed for Port Lincoln. Parked in the local woolworths and had a walk into town. That was better, some shops at last. We found a Government office that deals with driver related items. Went in to sort out our driving licences. Great news, we have only got to fill in a form and they will transfer our UK licence to give us an Aussie one. Of course there is a small handling fee, but no retest etc. Great. Could not complete this though, as we dont have an Aussie address yet....

We also found the local medical assurance office. In Oz you have to be registered with Medicare to entitle you to treatment etc. Great news, again we only had to fill a form out and they only wanted to see our Passports and Visas. Had to call back before 4pm as they could not register us as the computer had gone down. Called back and we are now registered. One step up the ladder.

Popped into woolworths to purchase lunch. Got back in van and drove to find a picnic spot.

Tracy was let loose with the camera again and took some pics of Northshields - overlooking Boston Bay.

We stopped at Wreck Bay for lunch. Watching the surfers. Funny that it seems nobody works in Australia, well not in the afternoon. Great spot for lunch, here are the photos.....

Then carried on down the road heading for a place called Lone Pine. Oh we ran out of Tarmac for the road and now were on a gravel road. Stopped several times for the photo taking..

Tracy saw a road sign that she wanted a picture of - just to prove that there are Kangaroos around, even got Emu's on this one.

Walking on the beach we did not see any Kangaroos but did find evidence of an Emu, his footprint in the sand.

Went back to Port Lincoln to pick up our Medicare cards and to buy the beer - Strange stuff out here. Bitter is not Bitter !!!!!!!!!

Found Port Lincoln caravan park and got a spot for the night. Nice location here, but quite busy, not many parks around....

Went for a walk along the beach and I dipped my toes in the water - bloody hell it was cold.
Tracy was quite happy standing on the rocks laughing at me....

Got my own back on her though - when I pointed out that on the way back to the park she was stood next to a 9 inch long Lizard who was sunning himself on the sign post. Great she left the camera in the van........ so no photo. Sorry.

Did not see too much wildlife today so the count is only :-

1 Blackbird.
1 Skink.

Will see what tomorrow brings.

 Comments

Day 7.

Well can't quite believe we have been here a week already, time is passing so fast and the distance travelled keeps going up. Costing a small fortune in fuel costs. Although it is only about 65p per litre when you are doing lots of miles it all adds up.

So far we have covered a small 2,000km.

Left the campsite at Port Augusta and headed to Whyalla, another 76km. This is a town that is concerened with the steal production of Australia. Have noticed as we are heading west that it is getting more arid, more flies and not much else. Towns are spread further apart and one must think about this as fuel is not always available. Keep a full tank at all times - thats my motto. You can see this from the photos...

Stopped at Whyalla, quite a large town, but not many shops. There was one worrying thing though, we walked past the police station and there was a queue, lots of young lads with papers in their hands (naughty boys), maybe we won't stop here too long. Photos of False Bay.

We left Whyalla and found a spot for lunch, Was ok but not much to look at, a few hills etc.

We then proceeded into Cowell - The home of the Oyster. Had a walk along the seafront and took a few pictures.

Then onto Arno Bay, with a population of 250. Think everybody was out of town today. Had a walk down the jetty and took pictures. Toilets were not great.

>

Whilst walking we did discover the Australian Dandelion is a bit different to ours. It even looks nice.....

Drove past Port Neill and Tracy was operating the camera.......

Headed for Tumby Bay to find a campsite, Hope they have room as there is only one to choose from. This is one of the areas we have looked at on the internet. The plot of land we looked at is still up for sale.... Will walk into town in the morning and find out more....

We have seen our first snake today.. bad news is that the car infront of us ran over it and there was not much left. We have however added it to our list of animals by the side of the road for today.

The list is as follows...

9 Kangaroo.
1 Skink.
4 Blackbird.
1 Rabbit.
1 Small Snake.
1 Large squashed snake.
oh and 1 Fly that hit our windscreen - what a mess.

Still no kangaroo though. Might have to re-think my kangaroo sausage making business.....

 Comments

Day 6.

Wow the sun is out at last... great.

Nothing much at Port Vincent apart from a great beach..

So Heading for Warooka, about 58km away. Have noticed that there are lots and lots of golf courses, nearly every town has one. Again nothing here so heading for Wallaroo, (one of the places we looked at on the internet) only 150km from warooka.

Wallaroo - A lovely little town, everything you need. Parked up by the sea front for lunch.

Then went 10km down the road to Kadina. Wow this is great, at last a big town in the middle of nowhere. Could quite easily live in this area be it Wallaroo or Kadina. Will have to consider this one carefully.

Left Kadina and went to Port Broughton, stopped for a photo moment but that was all.

Now headed for Port Pirie - what a dissapointment, did stop for a coffee and a view of the Flinders Ranges.

Have just looked at the time Oh its 5-00pm and we have not found a campsite. Most of them close at 6-00pm. Have to drive to Port Augusta for nearest site - 88km away. Luckily the speed limit was on my side and we made it. Have just booked in, not the best site but it will do - at least we have power and INTERNET. Only worrying thing is they shut the gate at 9-30pm and you cannot get out until 7-00am.. MMMMMM odd.

We have still not seen a Kangaroo, but the other animal count is going up, I mean the ones by the edge of the road.

Yesterday:-

3 Blackbirds.
1 White Parrott.
1 Red & White Parrott.

Today:-

3 Rabbit.
5 Blackbird.
1 Kangaroo.

One other thing we did find by the edge of the road is Watermelons, they are growing and there are hundreds of them. Just stop and help yourself - unluckily they are not ripe yet...

Sorry no update last night, we had no internet signal at the site we stayed at, and the Internet devices we bought in the UK (being told they were brilliant and usable in Australia) DONT WORK.... 3 network who would have it..

Anyway..

Left Victor Harbour in the morning - in the rain, headed into town to have a look around. Not much there. So travelling on up to Mclaren Vale about 44km. Again there was not a lot there so pressed on towards Adelaide. Oh we not only have rain but Hail now..!! Where has the sun gone. We stopped at Glenelg on the edge of Adelaide to have a look around the shops. Trying to sort Internet problem out... Not much sucess.. Had to drive through the centre of Adelaide to get to Gawler. Adelaide is just like London. Too busy and could not live there. Only a visit if needed, which we will have to do to get Bank Account etc sorted. Quickly stopped at Gawler to visit Woolworths to get food for lunch and dinner. Yes Big "W" is like Tesco - does everything. Not a Tesco in sight - dont think they have made it here yet.

Stopped at Hamley Bridge for lunch, then onto Owen and Balaklava eventually stopping at Port Wakefield.

The population of this town is 600, just like a scene out of a western, nobody in sight. The houses were like tin sheds, and the water level was almost at the back doors...

Decided not to stay there so drove to Ardrossan and quickly drove through it. Blink and you miss this one. We then stopped at Pine Point for a cuppa, great views of the typical Aussie back gardens.

Now heading for Port Vincent to find a campsite. Got one that overlooks the sea. Getting very cold now, might have to put the thermals on.

Went for a walk and met a family of pelicans who were begging for food.

No internet and no TV signal tonight - will have to get an early night...............

Still no KANGAROOOOOOOOOOOOOs...
